President Tinubu Attends ECOWAS 50th Anniversary Ceremony in Lagos

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was in Lagos on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The event was held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and Eko Hotels and Suites, drawing leaders and dignitaries from across the West African region.

As Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu delivered the keynote address, stressing the importance of matching bold policies with decisive action to accelerate regional development. He emphasized the need to invest in youth education and leadership to secure the future prosperity of West Africa.

The ceremony featured a reenactment of the original 1975 ECOWAS treaty signing, with General Yakubu Gowon—the only surviving signatory from that historic event—also delivering remarks.

In addition to the commemorations, President Tinubu is set to commission key infrastructure projects in Lagos later this month, including parts of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road.

The 50th anniversary celebration highlighted ECOWAS’s ongoing commitment to regional integration, peace, and development as member states renew their dedication to the community’s founding ideals.
