President Tinubu Commends Ogun State for Exemplary Hosting of National Sports Festival

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised Ogun State for its outstanding execution of the 22nd National Sports Festival, describing the event as “world-class” during the closing ceremony held on Thursday at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

The multi-sport festival, which ran from May 16 to May 30, attracted over 10,000 athletes representing all 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory, and invited junior athletes, showcasing Nigeria’s rich sporting talent across multiple venues within Ogun State.

Represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the closing event, President Tinubu commended the athletes for their dedication and the spirit of unity they demonstrated throughout the festival. “If you competed at this festival, you have been discovered. Your participation is a testament to the unity and cooperative federalism that strengthen our nation,” Akpabio quoted the President as saying.

The President also acknowledged the collective effort that made the festival a resounding success, declaring the event officially closed on behalf of himself and the people of Ogun State.

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State expressed deep appreciation to the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission for entrusting the state with the responsibility to host the prestigious festival. He highlighted the collective effort of the state’s residents in delivering an unforgettable sporting experience. “This achievement is the result of a united state working with one purpose,” the governor noted.

Speaking to the athletes, Governor Abiodun hailed them as champions who not only competed but also inspired others by exemplifying the true values of sportsmanship—where excellence meets honour and discipline blends with grace.

The festival concluded with Delta State emerging as the overall champions for the fifth consecutive time, securing their ninth National Sports Festival title in history. Meanwhile, Enugu State has been confirmed as the host for the 23rd edition scheduled for 2026.

The successful hosting of this edition has further reinforced Ogun State’s reputation as a premier destination for sporting events in Nigeria.
