President Tinubu Commissions Combat Helicopters, Reaffirms Commitment to Ending Insecurity

ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday commissioned two newly acquired Agusta A-109S Trekker helicopters into the operational fleet of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), reinforcing his administration’s resolve to equip the military with modern warfare assets in the ongoing battle against insecurity.

The induction ceremony, held at the Presidential Air Fleet Apron, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, was attended by top military commanders, government officials, and dignitaries from the defence and security sectors. The two attack helicopters are expected to significantly boost the Air Force’s capacity to conduct precise and rapid combat missions across volatile zones in Nigeria and the wider West African sub-region.

Addressing the gathering, President Tinubu assured Nigerians that his government would continue to invest in cutting-edge defence technologies and prioritize the operational readiness of the armed forces. He emphasised that equipping the military was central to achieving peace, national cohesion, and sustainable development.

“These platforms we are inducting today will not only enhance our aerial combat capability but will serve as a strong deterrent to criminal elements threatening our sovereignty,” President Tinubu stated. “The Nigerian Air Force, and indeed the entire Armed Forces, deserve all the support they can get to protect the lives and property of our citizens.”

He commended the Air Force leadership for their commitment to professionalism and operational excellence, and expressed confidence that the deployment of the helicopters would deliver strategic advantage to frontline troops.

The Agusta A-109S Trekker helicopters are known for their agility, advanced avionics, and suitability for both offensive missions and surveillance operations. Their induction aligns with Nigeria’s broader defence modernization strategy, which has seen increased procurement of air assets in recent years.

The President’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria continues to battle insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, and rising security challenges in other parts of the country. The aircraft are expected to support joint operations, including those involving ground forces and intelligence units.

This latest acquisition marks another milestone in the Tinubu administration’s pledge to restore security and build a safer, more stable Nigeria.
