President Tinubu Hails D’Tigress for Historic Fifth Straight AfroBasket Title

ABUJA, August 4, 2025

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their exceptional feat in clinching a fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title, describing the victory as a moment of immense pride for the nation.

In a congratulatory message shared via his official platform, the President wrote: “You did it, girls! @DtigressNG. Superb performance to become 5x consecutive Champions of Africa and seventh overall. Well done, Coach Rena and the team. You have made Nigeria proud. I am expecting you all, along with the trophy.”

The team’s triumph in Kigali, Rwanda, marks their seventh overall AfroBasket championship title, extending their dominance on the continent and reinforcing their position as Africa’s top-ranked women’s basketball team. Under the leadership of Coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress delivered a commanding performance throughout the tournament, culminating in a decisive win over Senegal in the final.

President Tinubu, using the hashtag #MissionV – Done & Dusted, commended the team’s discipline, resilience, and patriotism, noting that their success serves as an inspiration for young Nigerians and a testament to the power of unity and commitment.

This victory continues a legacy set in motion with the team’s first AfroBasket title in 2003 and sustained through recent championships in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and now 2025.

The President concluded his message by extending an invitation to the team and coaching crew to the State House in Abuja, where they will be formally received and celebrated for their historic achievement.
