President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised former Jigawa State Governor and elder statesman, Alhaji Sule Lamido, for his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s political development, describing him as a principled democrat and a symbol of consistency in public service.
The President made this known in remarks delivered on his behalf by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, at the official launch of Lamido’s autobiography, Being True to Myself, held at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja.
In his message, President Tinubu commended Lamido for documenting his political journey, describing the memoir as a vital addition to Nigeria’s political literature and a reflective account of a life committed to public service and democratic ideals.
“This is not merely the unveiling of a book; it is the celebration of a life defined by courage, consistency, and commitment to democratic ideals,” the President said. “Alhaji Sule Lamido, though a staunch member of the political opposition and often a critic of the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, remains one of the strong pillars of Nigeria’s political evolution.”
The President emphasized that democratic growth depends on the ability to embrace opposition voices, noting that political diversity should never translate to enmity. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation, has a seat at the table of national discourse.
The event, which drew the attendance of political figures, scholars, media professionals, and civil society actors, also provided an opportunity for reflection on the country’s democratic journey. President Tinubu used the occasion to underscore the importance of preserving Nigeria’s political memory, urging other leaders to emulate Lamido by documenting their experiences for posterity.
Commenting on the state of the nation, the President noted that while his administration’s reforms may be tough, they are already yielding macroeconomic gains. He reiterated the government’s resolve to strengthen national security, grow revenues through fair tax policies, and ensure economic stability without overburdening the populace.
He concluded by recommending Being True to Myself as a must-read for students, journalists, political scholars, and emerging leaders, adding that the book offers timeless insights into the complexities and responsibilities of leadership in Nigeria.
