President Tinubu Lifts Emergency Rule in Rivers State, Wike Commends Action

Abuja, Nigeria | September 18, 2025

President Bola Tinubu has lifted the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, restoring democratic governance after months of political tension.
The emergency rule, declared on March 18, 2025, followed a constitutional deadlock between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the state legislature, which had stalled governance and heightened security concerns. The decision to end the emergency was attributed to improved cooperation among political leaders in the state.
Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly officially resumed their duties on September 18, marking the return of civil authority.
Reacting to the development, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, commended President Tinubu for what he described as the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State. Wike noted that the president’s intervention reaffirmed his commitment to peace and the protection of Nigeria’s democracy.
The lifting of the emergency rule has been welcomed by stakeholders in Rivers State, who called for sustained unity and collaboration to ensure stability and development in the oil-rich region.
