President Tinubu Sets Up Inter-Ministerial Committee for Buhari’s Burial Planning

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the constitution of an inter-ministerial committee to oversee the planning and execution of the burial arrangements for former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The decision, announced on Saturday, July 12, 2025, follows consultations with the Buhari family and relevant government officials, aimed at ensuring a befitting and nationally coordinated farewell for the late Nigerian leader, who passed away recently.

The committee, comprising senior representatives from key ministries, departments, and agencies, is expected to handle protocol, security, logistics, media, and national honours for the former President. It will be chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and include members from the Ministries of Defence, Information and National Orientation, Interior, Foreign Affairs, and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), among others.

According to a statement issued by the SGF’s office, the inter-ministerial body is tasked with organising a state funeral that reflects the contributions of the late President Buhari to Nigeria’s unity, security, and democratic development.

“The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Buhari family, is committed to honouring the late former President in line with national traditions and his personal values,” the statement read in part.

Though the exact dates and itinerary for the burial have not been officially released, the committee has been mandated to begin immediate consultations with stakeholders, including security agencies, religious leaders, and traditional institutions, to ensure smooth planning.

President Tinubu described Buhari’s death as a monumental loss to the nation and pledged that his legacy will be preserved and honoured with dignity.
