Ikorodu, Lagos – June 28, 2025
As part of proactive measures to combat the rising threat of waterborne diseases, particularly cholera, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Government of Japan, hosted a one-day seminar in Ikorodu Division to educate communities on effective cholera prevention strategies.
The seminar, held under the banner of “Project 240236,” brought together public health experts, environmental officers, traditional leaders, and residents to discuss sustainable approaches to sanitation, water safety, and hygiene practices. It also marks a milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing partnership with international stakeholders to improve grassroots public health outcomes.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in curbing the spread of cholera in densely populated areas. He noted that with the rainy season increasing the risk of contamination in water sources, timely education and intervention are critical.
“This seminar is not just about cholera; it is about building healthier, more resilient communities. We appreciate the support of UNIDO and the Japanese Government in advancing this important cause,” Ajayi stated.
Representatives from UNIDO and the Japanese Embassy reiterated their countries’ commitment to improving public health infrastructure and awareness in Nigeria. They highlighted that environmental health and disease prevention remain key pillars of sustainable development.
The seminar also included practical sessions on water purification methods, proper waste disposal, and emergency response strategies, aiming to equip residents with tools to protect themselves and their families.
The event is part of a broader regional effort to strengthen community health systems and reduce preventable outbreaks through education, policy alignment, and strategic investments in environmental protection.
