A devastating fire swept through the upper floor of the RSD Shopping Complex in Ogungbade, Ibadan on Thursday afternoon, destroying property valued at millions of naira, according to the Oyo State Fire Service.
The blaze was reported at 12:58 p.m., prompting a swift response from fire officers led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Olubunmi. Upon arrival, they found the top floor of the multi-storey building fully engulfed. Fortunately, firefighters managed to contain the flames before they spread to the ground floor and nearby structures, averting a larger catastrophe .
General Manager of Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed that no casualties were recorded. Police officers from Adegbayi and Yemetu provided security at the scene while fire crews worked to control the situation .
This incident mirrors other recent outbreaks in Ibadan, including the massive fire at Aleshinloye Market in March, where multiple traders suffered losses worth several tens of millions of naira .
Market associations and victims of the RSD Complex inferno are expected to appeal to state authorities for relief and compensation. Meanwhile, the Fire Service has urged shop owners and commercial tenants across Ibadan to improve fire safety measures, especially routine checks on electrical fittings and adherence to building codes, to prevent similar incidents in future.
