Prosecution Ends Presentation in Nnamdi Kanu Trial

Abuja, June 19, 2025 – The Federal Government on Tuesday officially closed its case in the ongoing terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), after presenting its final witness before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The prosecution informed the court that it had concluded its presentation of evidence after calling all six listed witnesses, including security operatives who testified regarding Kanu’s alleged involvement in inciting violence, unlawful broadcasting, and terrorism-related activities.

Kanu, who has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest and extradition to Nigeria in 2021, is facing charges stemming from his leadership of IPOB and alleged attempts to destabilize the country through separatist agitation.

Following the close of the prosecution’s case, Kanu’s legal team indicated their intention to file a no-case submission, arguing that the evidence presented by the government fails to establish any criminal liability against their client. The court has adjourned proceedings to allow for the hearing of the defence’s motion.

Security was heightened around the court premises as supporters of the IPOB leader, civil society observers, and members of the press gathered to witness the day’s session. Court officials ensured proceedings remained orderly.

The trial, which has garnered both national and international attention, continues to spark conversations about civil liberties, national unity, and the right to self-determination. The outcome of the legal battle is widely expected to carry significant political and legal implications for the country.

The matter was adjourned to a later date for the hearing of the no-case submission, which could determine whether the court will proceed with a full defence or dismiss the charges.
