Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will stand trial next week for allegedly failing to declare income to Spain’s tax office, according to the Madrid court. Prosecutors are seeking a four-year and nine-month jail term for the 65-year-old Italian coach.
The allegations stem from Ancelotti’s time as Real Madrid coach between 2013 and 2015, during which he allegedly failed to declare over €1 million in earnings from image rights. Prosecutors claim that Ancelotti set up a complex system of shell companies to hide his extra earnings.
The trial, set to begin on Wednesday, is expected to last two days. Ancelotti is required to be present for the hearings. This is not the first time Ancelotti has faced legal issues related to tax fraud. A Spanish court ordered him to stand trial in 2023, but a date was not set at the time.
Ancelotti has previously dismissed the allegations as “an old story that I hope will be resolved soon.” The Italian coach has had a storied career, winning a record five Champions League titles and domestic league titles with several top European clubs.
The outcome of the trial remains to be seen, but the allegations have cast a shadow over Ancelotti’s illustrious career.
