Red Cross Trains 450 Lagos Youths Against Drug Abuse, Cybercrime

Lagos, Nigeria

The Nigerian Red Cross Society has launched its annual Youth and Leadership Camp in Lagos, targeting 450 young Nigerians with skills to resist drug abuse, cybercrime, and other social vices. The week-long program, which marks the initiative’s 60th anniversary, combines leadership training with mentorship to steer participants toward productive citizenship.

Lagos Branch Chairman Adebola Kolawole revealed the camp’s transformative impact since 1965: “We’re not just gathering youths, we’re equipping them with values to benefit themselves and Nigeria.” Participants will receive certificates and long-term mentorship upon completion.

Branch Secretary Olakunle Lasisi emphasized the Red Cross’ decades-long anti-drug abuse efforts, stating: “Through social activities, we attract youths, then deploy facilitators to teach them the dangers of substance abuse and cybercrime. Our mentor network rehabilitates street-connected children.”

The opening ceremony saw Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Permanent Secretary Femi Oke-Osanyintolu decorated as Red Cross Humanitarian Ambassador for his disaster response work. He dedicated the honour to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, citing the administration’s emergency management investments, including plans to establish Nigeria’s first Institute of Disaster Management by October.

“This institute will professionalize disaster preparedness when Lagos hosts all 36 state emergency agencies for International Disaster Risk Reduction Day,” Oke-Osanyintolu announced. The camp continues through the week with 50 Red Cross officers supervising activities.
