The global Islamic community is mourning the loss of Sheikh Dr. Sharaf Al-Sharif, a revered scholar of Islamic jurisprudence and a long-serving teacher at the Grand Mosque in Makkah. The Presidency of Religious Affairs at the Two Holy Mosques, led by His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sudais, confirmed the passing of the esteemed scholar in a heartfelt announcement, describing his death as a great loss to Islamic scholarship and the wider Ummah.
Sheikh Dr. Sharaf Al-Sharif holds the historic distinction of being the first person to obtain a Doctorate in Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) from Umm Al-Qura University—one of Saudi Arabia’s most prestigious institutions for Islamic studies. Known for his humility, depth of knowledge, and dedication to the sacred sciences, Dr. Al-Sharif spent decades imparting wisdom to students and pilgrims at the Grand Mosque, contributing significantly to the preservation and dissemination of Islamic legal thought.
Throughout his career, he authored several well-regarded works that remain influential among scholars and students alike. Among his most notable publications are Throwing the Jamarat, a detailed jurisprudential analysis of one of the core rituals of Hajj; Triple Divorce, which examines the complexities surrounding the controversial issue in Islamic family law; Regular Attendees of the Grand Mosque, a study exploring the spiritual and legal merits of consistent worship at the holy site; and Conditions of Tawaf, a foundational reference for those seeking a deeper understanding of the pilgrimage rites.
In his official statement, Sheikh Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sudais extended sincere condolences to the late scholar’s family, students, and followers across the world. He emphasized that the Presidency remains committed to safeguarding and publishing Dr. Al-Sharif’s scholarly legacy, ensuring that future generations benefit from his profound knowledge and contributions.
“His death is a painful loss not only to Makkah and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia but to the entire Muslim world. His scholarship enriched countless lives and illuminated complex areas of Fiqh with clarity and precision,” Dr. Al-Sudais remarked.
The Presidency has assured that efforts are already underway to archive and distribute his academic works, many of which are expected to be digitised and translated to reach a broader audience beyond the Arab-speaking world.
As condolences continue to pour in from Islamic institutions and scholars globally, prayers are being offered for Allah to shower His mercy on the departed scholar, forgive his shortcomings, and grant him the highest ranks in Jannatul Firdaus.
His passing marks the end of an era but also cements the legacy of a scholar whose knowledge will continue to guide and inspire generations to come.
