Rivers Government Calls for Peace as Lawmakers Push Forward with Impeachment Plans.

The Rivers State Government has urged the State House of Assembly to reconsider its stance on the ongoing political crisis, emphasizing the need for peace and stability in the state.

At a press conference in Port Harcourt, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joe Johnson, appealed to lawmakers to prioritize the welfare of the people and prevent an escalating crisis.

Political Tension Escalates Amid Impeachment Threat
The Rivers State House of Assembly recently issued a notice of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu, signaling a potential impeachment.

Johnson condemned the lawmakers’ refusal to allow Fubara to re-present the 2025 Appropriation Bill, despite a directive from the Supreme Court. He dismissed their claim that the governor had failed to follow due process, stressing that Fubara had demonstrated his commitment to complying with the ruling for the sake of peace.

“Fubara is fully prepared to re-present the 2025 budget and implement the Supreme Court’s ruling. His willingness to engage should not be ignored.”
Warning of Economic and Social Fallout
The commissioner warned that continued hostilities between the executive and legislative arms could trigger severe economic, social, and political consequences for Rivers State.

“If this opportunity to resolve the crisis is missed, everyone—residents, businesses, and government institutions—will suffer,” Johnson cautioned.
He also lamented the Supreme Court’s directive to withhold Rivers State’s revenue allocations, arguing that the move had crippled government operations.

“The inability to access funds means civil servants, retirees, and workers may not receive their salaries and pensions. The government cannot fulfill its financial obligations.”
Johnson called on lawmakers to reconsider their actions and work towards a peaceful resolution, warning that continued tensions could paralyze governance and deepen the crisis.

“The consequences of this political standoff will be devastating. It is time to put the people first and restore stability to Rivers State.”
