World number one Aryna Sabalenka clinched her second title of the year, defeating Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2 in the Miami Open final.
The Belarusian’s powerful game proved too much for Pegula, as she secured her first Miami Open title without dropping a set. Sabalenka’s impressive performance was marked by 31 winners, compared to 12 from her opponent.
The first set was a hard-fought affair, with seven breaks of serve and both players experiencing moments of dominance. However, Sabalenka’s strength and focus ultimately paid off, as she broke Pegula’s serve to take the set.
The second set was more one-sided, with Sabalenka taking control and breaking Pegula’s serve at 5-2 up to seal the victory.
“I’m speechless,” Sabalenka said in a post-match interview. “The last couple of finals were really tough and tight and close ones for me, so going into this one I was so focused on myself.”
Sabalenka’s win marks a significant milestone, as she claims her first Miami Open title. The victory also serves as a confidence booster, following her recent final losses at the Australian Open and Indian Wells.
