Sanwo-Olu Champions Urban Farming to Empower Women and Strengthen Household Nutrition

Lagos, June 22, 2025 – Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called for increased adoption of urban agriculture as a viable tool to empower women, enhance household nutrition, and promote food security across the state.

Speaking at a public engagement on sustainable development, the Governor emphasised that urban farming offers practical solutions to the economic and nutritional challenges faced by families, particularly women in densely populated urban centres.

Sanwo-Olu noted that with limited space and rising food costs, it has become imperative to encourage residents, especially women, to embrace home-based farming methods such as vertical gardens, container farming, and backyard vegetable cultivation.

“Urban agriculture is not just about growing food; it’s about building resilience, improving livelihoods, and enhancing health outcomes,” the Governor said. “We are committed to supporting Lagosians, especially our women, with the tools and training needed to grow what they eat and earn from it.”

He stated that the state government, through its agricultural programmes and agencies, will continue to provide seedlings, technical support, and market access to residents interested in small-scale farming.

The Governor highlighted ongoing partnerships with local and international development organisations to scale up urban farming initiatives and train women across various local government areas in innovative food production techniques.

The call aligns with Lagos State’s broader strategy to ensure food sufficiency, reduce dependency on imported produce, and strengthen grassroots economic empowerment,  all within the framework of the state’s THEMES+ agenda.

Residents were urged to take advantage of available programmes, while community leaders were encouraged to help mobilise support for the initiative across households and neighbourhoods.
