Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described the sweeping victory of the All Progressives Congress in Saturday’s local government elections as a resounding endorsement of the party’s leadership and developmental agenda at the grassroots level.
The APC won all 57 chairmanship seats and secured 375 out of 376 councillorship positions in the poll conducted across Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in the state. The results were announced by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission on Sunday.
In a statement issued shortly after the declaration of the final results, Governor Sanwo-Olu congratulated the party, its leaders, candidates and supporters, saying the outcome reaffirmed the trust Lagosians have in the APC’s vision and its capacity to deliver on promises.
“This outcome is a clear affirmation of the trust and confidence that the good people of Lagos have in the APC’s vision, leadership and unwavering commitment to inclusive development at the grassroots,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu extended his warm congratulations to the newly elected chairmen and councillors, but reminded them that victory at the polls marks the beginning of even greater responsibility to serve.
“This victory is not an end, but a means to an end, that end being selfless, responsive and accountable service to the people. Your responsibility is to deliver good governance, uplift communities and promote the welfare of every resident, regardless of political affiliation,” he said.
The governor urged the elected officials to govern with humility, transparency and compassion. He also called on party aspirants who did not secure tickets during the primaries to remain steadfast and loyal to the APC, stressing that unity within the party must take precedence over personal ambition.
“In every contest, there must be winners and others. But within the APC, we must always prioritise unity above personal ambition. That is the only way to sustain our legacy of service and success,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He also praised LASIEC for what he described as a peaceful and credible conduct of the election, and thanked security agencies for maintaining order throughout the process.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to grassroots development, Sanwo-Olu said the state government would continue to work closely with the incoming local government officials to ensure inclusive governance across all communities.
“Together, we will ensure that no community is left behind on our journey toward a Greater Lagos,” he added.
