Lagos — The Lagos State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to addressing the housing needs of residents, particularly the low-income demographic, through a robust and inclusive policy thrust anchored on the THEMES+ agenda. Under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state has rolled out far-reaching initiatives designed to expand access to affordable and decent shelter across various localities.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Housing, the government highlighted its strategic approach to sustainable housing development, which encompasses economic, social, institutional, and technical solutions tailored to the realities of Lagos’s growing population. The THEMES+ agenda — a policy framework that builds upon the original THEMES pillars — has placed housing as a central priority in the state’s drive for inclusive growth.
“Through carefully planned and executed projects, the Lagos State Government has continued to change the narrative by deliberately increasing the stock of affordable housing, with a strong focus on the low-income segment,” the statement read. “These efforts are not just about buildings; they are about improving the quality of life, stimulating job creation, and revitalising the urban economy.”
Over the years, the state has witnessed a notable rise in the number of housing units delivered under various schemes, including the LagosHOMS initiative, Rent-to-Own projects, and public-private partnerships aimed at bridging the housing deficit. These projects have not only provided shelter but have also created employment opportunities in the construction and real estate sectors.
From locations such as Igbogbo in Ikorodu to Iponri, Ibeshe, and Egan, the Sanwo-Olu administration has delivered new estates fitted with modern infrastructure, giving many first-time homeowners a chance at stability and dignity. The impact, according to the ministry, goes beyond physical structures, as entire communities are being reshaped into economically productive and socially cohesive environments.
Furthermore, the administration has prioritised regulatory reforms to attract private sector investment and promote innovation in the housing sector. The Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA) has been instrumental in restoring order and consumer confidence in property transactions.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision for housing, as encapsulated in the THEMES+ strategy, is not only to build homes but to build hope — ensuring that even the most vulnerable residents of the megacity have a stake in its future.
As Lagos continues to evolve into a modern, resilient city, the strides in housing development remain a testament to what is possible when policy, people, and purpose align.
