Saudi Arabia’s ‘Road to Mecca’ Project Celebrates 7 Years, Nearly One Million Pilgrims Benefited So Far

Saudi Arabia’s strategic effort to enhance the Hajj experience for international pilgrims has officially entered its seventh year, recording a significant milestone with close to one million beneficiaries since inception. Popularly referred to as the “Road to Mecca” initiative, this transformative project has streamlined pre-Hajj travel procedures for Muslim faithful embarking on the sacred journey from seven key countries.

As of this year, the initiative, which is fully sponsored and operated by the Saudi government, has served a total of 940,657 pilgrims, according to figures released by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). The countries currently participating in the programme include Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Morocco, Turkey, and Côte d’Ivoire, with services rendered through 11 designated international airports across these nations.

The Road to Mecca initiative was introduced with the vision of simplifying and accelerating the travel experience of pilgrims even before they set foot in the Kingdom. It covers critical pre-departure processes such as the collection of biometric data, issuance of electronic Hajj visas, health requirement verifications, and the complete processing of travel documents. In addition, pilgrims’ luggage is tagged and sorted at the point of departure, removing the need for repeated checks upon arrival.

One of the major highlights of the initiative is the seamless entry procedure once pilgrims land in Saudi Arabia. Upon arrival, they are directly transported to their accommodation in the holy cities of Mecca or Medina via pre-arranged buses. Meanwhile, their luggage is delivered straight to their lodgings, eliminating the stress and confusion often associated with international travel during the Hajj season.

Launched as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 reform agenda, the initiative reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to modernising its services while upholding the sacred traditions of Islam. The annual pilgrimage, which brings together millions of Muslims from around the world, is one of the five pillars of Islam and a deeply spiritual obligation for every able-bodied Muslim with the financial means to perform it.

As preparations for this year’s Hajj intensify, the early arrival of several pilgrim groups under the Road to Mecca initiative marks another promising chapter in the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to provide a dignified and spiritually fulfilling journey for the guests of Allah. The consistent growth and efficiency of the programme signal Saudi Arabia’s dedication to ensuring the comfort, safety, and ease of pilgrims from diverse regions, including parts of Africa and Asia.

With nearly one million pilgrims already benefiting from the initiative in just seven years, expectations remain high that more countries may be added to the list in the near future, especially as the Kingdom continues to expand its infrastructure and improve the Hajj experience for Muslims across the globe.
