Saudi Authorities Ban Promotional Activities During Ramadan Iftar at Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi

In a firm move to preserve the sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques during the holy month of Ramadan, the General Authority for the Care of the Grand Mosque in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah has announced a complete ban on promotional or advertising activities during the distribution of iftar meals.

The new guidelines, released ahead of the 2026 Ramadan season, stipulate that any individual or organisation wishing to provide iftar meals within the precincts of Masjid al-Haram or Masjid an-Nabawi must first obtain an official permit. Only legally recognised entities with approved plans for food distribution will be eligible for this authorisation.

The Authority stressed that offering iftar within the holy mosques is a spiritual act of generosity and devotion—not a commercial platform. As such, all forms of branding, including the display of company logos, advertising banners, product placement, or any form of marketing material, are strictly prohibited during the distribution of meals.

Furthermore, the distribution must be carried out only in designated zones and at approved times, to ensure orderliness and to uphold the dignity and sanctity of the sacred spaces. Meal providers are also required to comply with strict hygiene and safety standards, with particular attention to food quality and packaging.

The Authority warned that violators of these guidelines will face immediate sanctions. A first-time breach will attract a formal written warning, while repeat offenses could lead to outright revocation of the distribution permit. In addition, permits may be cancelled without notice if food items outside the approved list are served or if permits are found to have been transferred to third parties without prior consent.

This directive is part of broader efforts by Saudi Arabia to ensure that religious activities within Islam’s holiest sites are conducted with utmost respect and discipline. It also reflects the country’s ongoing commitment to managing Ramadan operations efficiently while preserving the spiritual atmosphere of the mosques.
