A Labour Party (LP) agent was allegedly slapped by an unidentified individual during Saturday’s local government elections in Lagos State, with security operatives reportedly turning a blind eye to the incident.
The assault, which occurred at a polling unit in one of the local council areas, drew concern from onlookers and party supporters who accused security agents present at the scene of negligence and bias. Eyewitnesses claimed that despite the physical attack on the agent, no immediate intervention or arrest was made by the officers on duty.
The LP agent, whose identity remains undisclosed at the time of this report, was reportedly attacked while trying to raise concerns over suspected electoral irregularities. The situation, although tense, was eventually brought under control by other party agents and voters at the polling centre.
Reacting to the development, Labour Party representatives condemned the attack, describing it as an affront to democratic principles and a reflection of growing intolerance within the electoral process. They further demanded swift investigation and justice for the assaulted agent.
Calls have also mounted for the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) and security authorities to ensure the safety of all stakeholders and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
The ongoing polls have witnessed a mix of smooth operations and reported disruptions in various areas across the state, with voter turnout varying significantly.
