The Nigerian Senate has approved a budget of ₦124.289 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for the 2024 fiscal year, signaling a major boost in funding aimed at strengthening the nation’s police force. This allocation represents a significant increase compared to previous years and underscores the government’s commitment to improving security infrastructure and police welfare.
The approved budget includes provisions for both capital and recurrent expenditures, targeting critical areas such as police training, procurement of modern equipment, and the development of necessary infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency.
Established under the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Establishment) Act of 2019, the NPTF is designed to provide an additional, dedicated source of funding for the police beyond the traditional federal budget, with the goal of improving policing standards nationwide.
Senate leadership expressed optimism that the increased funding would address pressing security challenges and support ongoing efforts to modernize the police force, thereby contributing to improved public safety and law enforcement effectiveness across Nigeria. The budget will now proceed to the next stages of legislative and executive approval.
