BONNY, July 25, 2025 – The Senate Committee on Navy, led by its Chairman, Senator Gbenga Daniel, has conducted an oversight visit to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny in Rivers State, reaffirming the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Navy in its strategic operations across Nigeria’s maritime domain.
During the visit on Wednesday, the committee assessed the state of facilities, logistics, and operational readiness of the base, which plays a crucial role in safeguarding oil and gas infrastructure in the Niger Delta and combating maritime crimes, including piracy and crude oil theft.
Senator Daniel commended the personnel of FOB Bonny for their dedication and resilience in carrying out their duties in a challenging environment. He acknowledged the importance of the base in protecting Nigeria’s economic assets and reiterated the Senate’s willingness to provide legislative backing for improved funding and infrastructure development.
“We are impressed with the strategic role FOB Bonny plays in our nation’s security architecture,” Senator Daniel stated. “The Senate will ensure that the Navy gets the needed support to strengthen operations and upgrade critical facilities.”
The Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Saheed Akinwande, represented by the Commanding Officer of the base, briefed the lawmakers on the operational challenges faced by the unit, particularly in the areas of logistics, accommodation, and surveillance equipment. He also highlighted several recent achievements in intercepting illegal bunkering activities and curbing sea piracy.
The visit concluded with a tour of key facilities, including the jetty, armory, communication unit, and accommodation blocks. The committee pledged to present their findings to the Senate to influence budgetary decisions in favor of boosting Nigeria’s maritime defense capabilities.
