Abuja, July 11, 2025 — The Nigerian Senate has commended Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for his historic election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council, describing it as a significant boost to Nigeria’s international image and trade influence.
During plenary on Wednesday, lawmakers celebrated Adeniyi’s emergence as the first Nigerian to lead the global customs body. The Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, led the commendation, noting that the achievement not only brings pride to the nation but strategically positions Nigeria to shape global trade policies and customs practices in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“This unprecedented achievement not only places Nigeria on the global map but also empowers us to influence international trade flows in line with President Tinubu’s economic vision,” Barau said.
Senators across party lines echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that Adeniyi’s election comes amid sweeping reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service under his leadership. Since his appointment in 2023, CGC Adeniyi has championed modernization, improved stakeholder collaboration, and led initiatives to curb smuggling, streamline trade processes, and grow revenue generation.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff, Senator Isah Jibrin, described the WCO appointment as a clear endorsement of the credibility and innovation driving the Customs Service in recent years.
“Under his stewardship, the Service has embraced innovation, promoted integrity, and strengthened collaboration with stakeholders and other agencies, resulting in enhanced operational efficiency,” Senator Jibrin stated.
The Senate reaffirmed its support for CGC Adeniyi’s ongoing reforms and pledged to work with the Customs Service to deepen trade facilitation and uphold Nigeria’s leadership role in international customs operations.
