Senate Pledges Strategic Collaboration with Nigerian Army to Bolster National Security

Abuja, August 1, 2025

The Nigerian Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering strong legislative support for the Nigerian Army in a bid to strengthen national security and address the evolving security challenges confronting the country.

This assurance was given during a high-level engagement between members of the Senate Committee on Army and the leadership of the Nigerian Army, held at the Army Headquarters in Abuja. The Senate delegation, led by the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, expressed confidence in the Army’s ongoing counterterrorism, anti-banditry, and internal security operations across various regions of the country.

Senator Yar’adua commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, for his steadfast leadership and strategic reforms that have significantly improved the morale and operational capacity of troops on the frontlines. He reiterated the Senate’s readiness to provide legislative backing for funding, training, and acquisition of modern equipment to support the Army’s mandate.

“We are here to strengthen the collaboration between the legislature and the military, particularly the Nigerian Army, to ensure the safety of lives and property across Nigeria. Security is a shared responsibility, and as lawmakers, we are committed to playing our part by ensuring adequate budgetary provisions and oversight,” Senator Yar’adua stated.

In his response, General Lagbaja expressed gratitude to the Senate for its continued support and emphasized the importance of synergy between the military and other arms of government in securing the nation. He also highlighted the Army’s achievements in recent months, particularly in curbing insurgency in the North-East and tackling rising security threats in the North-West and South-East regions.

Lagbaja noted that with sustained support from the National Assembly, the Army would consolidate its gains and enhance operational effectiveness through technology-driven intelligence, rapid deployment capacity, and improved welfare for personnel.

The meeting ended with a mutual understanding to establish regular engagements between the Senate and the military, aimed at reviewing progress and aligning legislative actions with national defense priorities.

As Nigeria continues to confront multi-dimensional security threats, the assurance of legislative-military collaboration signals a renewed commitment to stability, peace, and coordinated governance.
