Senator Natasha Arraigned Before Federal High Court in Abuja on Cybercrime Charges

Abuja, Nigeria – June 30, 2025

The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, was on Monday arraigned before the Federal High Court, Abuja, over alleged cybercrime-related offences.

The charges stem from purported online publications and electronic communications alleged to have targeted the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, and the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Adoza Bello.

According to the prosecution, Senator Natasha is accused of committing acts in violation of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, particularly sections bordering on cyberstalking and the dissemination of false information using digital platforms.

The court proceedings, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, saw the senator take her plea after the charges were read out to her. She pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

Her legal counsel, in response, submitted a formal application for bail, arguing that the lawmaker poses no flight risk and is prepared to stand trial. The prosecution, however, opposed the bail request, citing the sensitivity of the case and the personalities involved.

Justice Nwite adjourned the matter for ruling on the bail application and scheduled the commencement of trial for a later date.

The arraignment has sparked significant public interest, given the stature of the accused and the alleged victims. It also underscores growing concerns over the use of digital media platforms in Nigeria’s political space and the legal implications of cyber communications involving public officials.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan remains a prominent political figure and vocal advocate on several national issues. Her legal team has vowed to vigorously defend her, insisting that the charges are politically motivated and an attempt to stifle her dissenting voice.

The case continues to unfold as the court weighs the merits of the prosecution’s evidence against the senator’s defense.
