Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, has called for urgent and decisive action to address the escalating insurgency in Nigeria. Concerned by the deteriorating security situation, Kalu emphasized that the federal government must act swiftly to prevent terrorists from overrunning regions like the South-East and Borno State.
Kalu, who serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on South-East Development Commission, stressed the need for additional resources to be allocated to security agencies. He also advocated for a non-partisan approach to addressing insecurity, emphasizing that security issues should not be politicized. The senator highlighted the importance of honest communication with President Bola Tinubu about the true state of insecurity, urging the Minister of Information to consult with security chiefs before making public statements.
In his appeal, Kalu referenced recent warnings by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, who expressed concerns about parts of his state being lost to insurgents. Kalu warned that if immediate action is not taken, both Borno and the South-East could face severe security threats. He commended the efforts of Nigeria’s security forces but emphasized the need for enhanced support and resources to combat the growing insurgency effectively.
As Nigeria grapples with these challenges, Kalu’s call for urgent action underscores the critical need for a unified and effective response to address the country’s security woes.
