Senegal Beat Sudan on Penalties to Claim CHAN 2024 Bronze

Kampala, Uganda – August 30, 2025

Senegal secured the bronze medal at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 after edging Sudan 4–2 on penalties in a third-place playoff at Mandela National Stadium, Kampala. The tightly contested match ended 1–1 in regulation time before going straight to a shootout.

Sudan struck first in the 6th minute, when Mohamed Tia Asad rose highest to head in from a corner. The defending champions Senegal responded in the 58th minute, with Seyni Mbaye finishing off a precise cross from Ousseynou Seck.

Sudan nearly regained the lead late in the game when Maaz Koko was put through on goal, but he squandered the chance with eight minutes left.

With no extra time, the match went to penalties. Sudan faltered, missing two spot-kicks through Walieldin Khdir and Musab Makeen, while Senegal converted all four attempts via Joseph Layousse Samb, Issa Kane, Vieux Cissé, and Libasse Guèye to seal victory.

The result means Senegal, who won the tournament in 2022, secured back-to-back podium finishes in CHAN.

Senegal head coach Souleymane Diallo praised his team’s resilience: “The players showed great character after the semi-final setback. We wanted to finish with something, and we did.” Sudan’s coach Kwesi Appiah commended his squad despite the defeat, saying they had “fought bravely with limited preparation.”

Attention now shifts to Nairobi, where Morocco will face Madagascar in the CHAN 2024 final.
