Seventeen Killed as Suspected Herdsmen Launch Deadly Attacks on Multiple Benue Communities, Residents Flee in Panic

On the night of April 17, 2025, suspected armed militia, believed to be herders, launched coordinated attacks on communities within the Sankera axis of Benue State, specifically targeting areas in Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas. The assaults resulted in the deaths of 17 residents—five in the Gbagir area of Ukum and twelve in Logo—before security forces could intervene. The attackers reportedly opened fire sporadically on unsuspecting farmers while retreating into the forests near the Taraba border.

The Benue State Police Command, led by Commissioner Steve H. Yabanet, promptly deployed tactical teams to repel the assailants and continue operations to apprehend them. Injured victims have been admitted to hospitals for treatment. Authorities have cautioned the public against spreading unverified reports that could incite panic, affirming their commitment to restoring peace in the affected communities.

These deadly attacks come amid a surge in violence in Benue, following recent killings in other parts of the state, and have heightened concerns over security in the region as residents prepare for Easter celebrations.
