SFH Champions Poetry as a Catalyst for Unity and Social Change

The Managing Director of the Society for Family Health (SFH), Dr. Omokhudu Idogho, has underscored the transformative power of poetry, calling for its recognition as a vital tool for peace, unity, and social progress.

Speaking in Jalingo during the 2025 World Poetry Day celebration, Idogho, represented by Aisha Dadi, emphasized this year’s theme, “Poetry as a Bridge for Peace and Inclusion.” He highlighted poetry’s ability to foster understanding, promote dialogue, and bridge cultural divides.

“This occasion reminds us of the profound impact poetry has on shaping individuals and communities,” he stated. “Poetry is more than just an artistic expression; it amplifies unheard voices, inspires change, and connects people across different backgrounds. It nurtures creativity, encourages discourse, and cultivates a culture of inclusivity and peace.”

Addressing students participating in a poetry recitation competition, he urged them to use their poetic expressions as instruments of positive change. “Your poems go beyond this competition; they hold the potential to shape opinions, influence policies, and drive meaningful societal transformation,” he added.

Also speaking, Alhaji Idris Goje, Permanent Secretary of the Taraba State Ministry of Education, described poetry as a mirror of society, capturing its struggles, victories, and aspirations. He encouraged students to harness poetry in addressing critical social issues such as child marriages, early pregnancies, school dropouts, HIV prevention, and gender-based violence.

Goje also commended efforts to promote education and literary development, recognizing the contributions of organizations dedicated to empowering young minds.

The event concluded with Winners Comprehensive Secondary School, Jalingo, emerging as the champion of the poetry competition.
