Maiduguri – In a jaw‑dropping courtroom showdown, notorious Aisha Alkali Wakil, widely known as “Mama Boko Haram”, has been jailed for a staggering 14 years for fleecing N11 million under the guise of bogus contracts. The Borno State High Court, presided over by Justice Umaru Fadawu, found Wakil and her two accomplices guilty of conspiracy and fraud in a brutal verdict delivered on February 12, 2024.
Wakil, the flamboyant CEO of the so‑called Complete Care and Aid Foundation NGO, teamed up with Programme Manager Tahiru Saidu Daura and Country Director Prince Lawal Shoyade to hoodwink Bashir Abubakar of Duty Free Shop Ltd. The trio promised him five solar‑powered X‑ray machines worth N40 million, but instead vanished with N40 million, later pocketing another N11 million from separate contract shenanigans.
Despite facing a two‑count charge filed on March 5, 2020, all three defendants pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors laid bare their elaborate scam: Wakil and co-defendants duped the petitioner with fake contract documents, then swindled his money without delivering a thing
Justice Fadawu wasted no time. He gave each of the three a 10‑year sentence for conspiracy, plus another 10 years for obtaining money by false pretence, all to run concurrently, resulting in a total of ten years behind bars. On top of that, they were ordered to repay N40 million to their victim.
For Wakil, this isn’t her first taste of prison. Known for her flamboyant self-styling and prior fraud convicts, she now joins the growing list of headlines tied to her dubious name.
This dramatic sentencing sends a loud message: Nigeria’s courts are short on mercy for repeat offenders, especially those trading on public trust and NGO legitimacy.
