Sheikh Faisal Ghazzawi Returns to Masjid al-Haram After Long Illness, Set to Resume Leading Prayers

MAKKAH, SAUDI ARABIA — After enduring a prolonged period of ill health, respected Islamic scholar and prominent Imam of Masjid al-Haram, Sheikh Dr. Faisal Ghazzawi, has successfully recovered and is now preparing to resume his revered duties at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

Sources within the administration of the Two Holy Mosques confirmed over the weekend that Sheikh Ghazzawi, who had been absent from public religious functions due to a serious medical condition, has made a full recovery following extensive treatment and rest. His return has been warmly welcomed by clerics, worshippers, and scholars both within the Kingdom and across the Muslim world.

The Sheikh, known for his deeply spiritual sermons and melodious recitation of the Qur’an, is expected to lead congregational prayers once again and deliver sermons from the mimbar (pulpit) of Masjid al-Haram — a responsibility reserved for the most esteemed scholars in the Muslim ummah. His absence had been felt deeply, especially by regular worshippers in Makkah and millions who follow the Grand Mosque’s broadcasts globally.

In a heartfelt message, the President of Religious Affairs for the Two Holy Mosques, Sheikh Prof. Dr. Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz Al-Sudais, gave thanks to Allah for the Sheikh’s recovery, describing his return as a moment of joy and spiritual upliftment for the entire Muslim community. He extended warm felicitations on behalf of all imams, muezzins, khateebs, and staff of both Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah.

Dr. Al-Sudais praised Sheikh Ghazzawi’s patience during his illness, as well as his unwavering dedication to his spiritual calling. He also prayed for continued strength, good health, and longevity for the Sheikh as he resumes service in one of Islam’s holiest spaces.

Sheikh Dr. Faisal Ghazzawi has long been recognised for his contributions to Islamic education, religious guidance, and the preservation of the Quranic tradition. His leadership at the Grand Mosque plays a vital role during key religious seasons, including Ramadan, Hajj, and Friday sermons that are followed live by millions of Muslims worldwide.

As of the time of filing this report, preparations are already underway to accommodate his return to the prayer schedule, with religious affairs authorities urging worshippers to continue praying for the Sheikh’s complete wellness and strength in service.
