Vice President Shettima Unveils New Agricultural Reforms to Boost Rural Employment and Reduce Poverty

Abuja, Nigeria | September 16, 2026
Vice President Kashim Shettima has announced a series of fresh incentives aimed at transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector, targeting the reduction of poverty and creation of jobs in rural communities. The announcement was made today during the FAO National and Subregional Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum in Abuja.
The reforms are designed to lift 35 million Nigerians out of poverty and create 21 million full-time jobs in rural and agrarian communities. Key initiatives include:
Single-window platforms for land registration to simplify access for investors.
Strengthening agricultural credit systems to facilitate financing for farmers and agribusinesses.
Expansion of irrigation infrastructure to maximize Nigeria’s untapped agricultural potential.
Scaling up mechanization to enhance productivity and reduce labor intensity.
“These reforms are central to unlocking Nigeria’s food production potential and ensuring sustainable rural development,” Shettima stated.
The measures align with Nigeria’s National Development Plan (2021–2025) and are part of the government’s broader strategy to achieve food and nutrition sufficiency through targeted agricultural investments.
While the initiatives have been widely welcomed, details on timelines and specific implementation mechanisms remain to be disclosed.
