Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has urged the government to increase police salaries to ₦500,000 per month while also slashing senators’ pay to around ₦30 million per month.
Sowore highlighted that many police officers currently earn less than ₦57,000 monthly, despite risking their lives and guarding sensitive assets. He argued the low pay undermines morale and encourages corruption.
He also pointed out that federal lawmakers take home about ₦29–₦30 million monthly. In comparison, he said a worker earning the minimum wage of ₦30,000 would need 38 years to earn a senator’s monthly income.
Sowore emphasized the need to rebalance Nigeria’s wage structure: boosting frontline security workers’ pay while ensuring legislators’ salaries align with economic realities and public expectations.
