The Nigerian military has deployed Special Forces to Benue State as part of renewed efforts to combat escalating insecurity, including attacks by armed groups and communal violence in parts of the state.
The deployment, confirmed by military sources on Sunday, follows recent incidents in several local government areas, particularly in Gwer West, Ukum, and Agatu, where clashes have resulted in the loss of lives and displacement of residents.
The arrival of the Special Forces was welcomed by the Benue State Government, with Governor Hyacinth Alia stating that the deployment demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring peace in the troubled areas.
“We thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the security agencies for prioritising the safety of our people. We believe this deployment will bring the relief that our communities have long awaited,” the governor said in a statement.
Military officials revealed that the Special Forces are trained in counter-terrorism, intelligence operations, and rapid response, and are expected to work in synergy with the Operation Whirl Stroke task force and local security outfits.
Community leaders in affected areas expressed cautious optimism, urging the military to maintain professionalism and calling on residents to cooperate with the security operatives.
Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters assured that the troops would intensify intelligence gathering, patrols, and surveillance, adding that any group found threatening peace and security in Benue State will be decisively dealt with.
