Sri Lanka Grants Free Tourist Visas to 40 Countries in Economic Revival Push

Colombo, July 26, 2025 — In a strategic move to revitalize its tourism-dependent economy, the government of Sri Lanka has announced a new visa-free entry policy for visitors from 40 countries. The initiative, which took immediate effect, is aimed at stimulating foreign arrivals and accelerating post-crisis economic recovery.

According to authorities in Colombo, the selected countries span across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, with the inclusion of key markets such as China, India, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and several Gulf nations. Tourists from these countries will now be able to enter Sri Lanka without paying visa fees, provided they meet the required documentation and entry conditions.

Sri Lanka’s Tourism Minister highlighted that the policy is part of broader efforts to attract five million visitors annually and generate billions in tourism revenue, which is a vital lifeline for the island nation. The country is still recovering from the dual shocks of a prolonged economic crisis and the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely affected its travel and hospitality sectors.

The visa waiver scheme will be reviewed periodically, with the government expressing optimism that increased tourist footfall will create jobs, boost local businesses, and restore investor confidence in the hospitality and transport sectors. Industry stakeholders have lauded the decision, noting that simplified entry procedures could place Sri Lanka in a stronger position against regional competitors in the global tourism market.
