LagRide drivers are threatening to go on strike due to alleged misconduct and arrest threats from the platform’s management. The management accused some drivers of discouraging passengers from using the LagRide app, instead promoting alternative services like InDrive and Bolt. They also alleged that drivers were refusing trips and accepting cash payments outside of the app, which they considered a violation of company policy and an act of sabotage.
In response to these allegations, LagRide management warned drivers that they would involve the Lagos State Task Force in arresting and disciplining non-compliant drivers. However, the drivers, represented by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), rejected these allegations and warned against resorting to arrests and vehicle impoundment.
Key Issues:
Disabled Cash Payment Option: LagRide’s decision to disable the cash payment option within the app has been met with criticism from drivers. They claim that this policy forces them to remit their earnings and wait for weekly payouts.
Multiple Levies: Drivers have decried the multiple levies imposed by CIG Motors, including charges for insurance, communication services, dashcams, and phones. They argue that these charges do not cover vehicle maintenance or repairs.
Unresolved App-Related Issues: Since CIG Motors took over the management of LagRide, drivers have raised concerns over unresolved app-related issues and unfair operational policies.
The crisis has been escalating, with drivers boycotting the platform’s app and demanding urgent reforms to improve their working conditions and payment structures. The Lagos State Government and LagRide management are under pressure to intervene and prevent a full-blown strike that could disrupt the city’s ride-hailing sector.
