The National Association of University Students (NAUS), South-West zone, has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government to reverse the recent hike in telecommunication tariffs or face student protests across the region.
During a press conference held in Lagos on Thursday, the student body emphasized that affordable internet access is essential for students who rely on digital platforms for virtual lectures, research, assignment submissions, and online discussions.
“Students across campuses depend on affordable internet access to attend virtual lectures, conduct research, submit assignments, and participate in online discussions,” stated Tiamiyu Olayinka, NAUS National Vice President (South-West).
The student association also highlighted other pressing concerns requiring government attention, including rising insecurity on campuses, epileptic power supply, and incessant strikes that continue to disrupt academic activities.
“By increasing telecom tariffs, these critical academic engagements are being disrupted. We call on relevant authorities to act swiftly and responsibly to address pressing concerns,” the statement continued.
The student body warned that failure to address these demands would result in mobilization of students throughout the South-West region.
“Failure to meet up with our demands will leave us with no choice than to mobilise students across South-West and take a bold step to defend our rights and secure a better academic environment for all,” the statement concluded.
