Study Finds 70% of ChatGPT Use Unrelated to Work, Says OpenAI

San Francisco, USA | September 22, 2025

A new study conducted by OpenAI has revealed that nearly 70% of ChatGPT usage worldwide is unrelated to work, with the majority of interactions focused on entertainment, personal assistance, and everyday problem-solving.

According to the report, only about 30% of users employ the AI tool for professional or academic purposes, such as drafting documents, analyzing data, or coding support. Instead, most users turn to ChatGPT for casual conversations, learning hobbies, exploring creative content, and seeking advice on lifestyle matters.

OpenAI noted that the findings underscore how generative AI has become a mainstream tool beyond offices and classrooms, shaping how people interact with technology in daily life. “The results highlight the versatility of ChatGPT as both a productivity aid and a personal assistant,” the company stated.

Analysts believe the statistics reflect the broader adoption of AI as a general-purpose companion technology, mirroring the evolution of smartphones from strictly communication devices into multipurpose everyday tools.

The study also pointed out regional variations: in some developing markets, educational uses were higher, while in advanced economies, entertainment and casual use dominated.

Industry experts say the trend could influence how AI companies design future updates, balancing workplace efficiency tools with features that cater to personal use.
