The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, today marked his 19th Eid-ul-Adha on the throne, leading millions of Nigerian Muslims in Eid prayers and special supplications for peace, unity, and national progress.
The grand prayer session, held at the Sultan Bello Eid Ground in Sokoto, drew dignitaries, traditional rulers, Islamic scholars, and thousands of worshippers from across the state and beyond. The Sultan led the two-raka’at Eid prayer and later offered heartfelt prayers for the security and prosperity of Nigeria.
In his Eid message, Alhaji Abubakar III emphasized the values of sacrifice, compassion, and obedience as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim (AS), urging Muslims to uphold these principles in their daily lives.
“This sacred occasion is a time of reflection, unity, and submission to the will of Allah. I urge all Muslims to use this period to promote love, tolerance, and support for one another, especially the less privileged,” the Sultan said.
Since ascending the throne in 2006, the Sultan has remained a pillar of religious leadership and a strong advocate for interfaith dialogue, peacebuilding, and national cohesion. His leadership during religious observances like Eid has become a symbol of spiritual direction and unity for the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.
The Eid-ul-Adha celebration, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. In keeping with tradition, Muslims across Nigeria are participating in the ritual slaughter of animals and distributing meat to family, friends, and those in need.
Security was tight across major prayer grounds in Sokoto and other parts of the country, with law enforcement agencies ensuring a peaceful and orderly observance of the festivities.
