Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State | September 28, 2025

The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the National Traditional Rulers Council of Nigeria, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on Saturday paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Awujale of Ijebu, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

The Sultan, who had been in the South West since Thursday, September 25, for the coronation of former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, took time to commiserate with the Adetona royal family on the sidelines of the Ibadan ceremony.

He was received by Prince Saud Adedire Adetona, heir of the royal family, before proceeding to the tomb of the late monarch, where he offered prayers for the repose of Oba Adetona, who died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.

The Sultan, accompanied by the President of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo, and other Muslim leaders, was later hosted at a reception attended by prominent Ijebu indigenes, including the Regent of Awujale, Olor’ogun Dr. Sonny Folorunso Kuku, Olori Omo Oba Ijebu, Dr. Kunle Hassan, members of the royal family, and widows of the late monarch.

In his welcome address, Regent Kuku described the Sultan’s visit as a powerful gesture of unity, stressing that it reflected the deep bonds of friendship across Nigeria’s diverse communities. He recalled his long-standing relationship with the Sultan from their student days, adding that the visit underscored national solidarity.

While speaking, Sultan Abubakar urged continued prayers for the late monarch, noting that leaders should always be remembered in daily worship. He also called for peace and unity during the process of selecting a new Awujale, stressing the importance of family harmony and communal stability.

“We pray that Almighty Allah grants Ijebu a worthy successor who will surpass the great works of Oba Adetona, unite the community, and foster peace in the South West and Nigeria at large,” the Sultan said.

The visit was attended by several high-ranking figures in Ijebu-Ode and members of the royal household, highlighting the enduring influence and legacy of the late monarch.
