Nigeria’s Super Falcons launched their 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in style, securing an emphatic 3–0 victory over Tunisia in their opening group match on Sunday.
The encounter, played at one of the host stadiums in Morocco, showcased Nigeria’s attacking prowess and defensive discipline, as the nine-time African champions dominated proceedings from start to finish.
The goals came courtesy of star striker Asisat Oshoala, who opened the scoring in the 17th minute, followed by a well-placed finish by Rasheedat Ajibade before halftime. Uchenna Kanu sealed the win with a third goal in the second half, capping off a confident team performance.
Head coach Randy Waldrum expressed satisfaction with the result, praising the team’s cohesion and determination. “It’s a great way to start the tournament. The players followed the game plan, and we were clinical in front of goal,” he said during the post-match briefing.
The win places Nigeria at the top of their group and boosts confidence ahead of tougher fixtures in the coming days. Fans and pundits alike are tipping the Super Falcons as favourites to retain their dominance on the continent, with sights set on a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
The team will face their next group opponent later in the week as they continue their quest for continental glory.
