Super Falcons Stage Dramatic Comeback to Claim WAFCON Title

Nigeria’s Super Falcons produced a stunning second-half fightback to defeat Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final on Saturday, lifting the trophy for a record-extending tenth time.

The hosts had looked set for victory after establishing a commanding first-half lead through Ghizlane Chebbak’s 12th-minute opener and Sanaâ Mssoudy’s 24th-minute strike. However, Justin Madugu’s side mounted a remarkable resurgence after the interval.

Esther Okoronkwo sparked Nigeria’s revival from the penalty spot in the 64th minute before Folashade Florence Ijamilusi drew the champions level seven minutes later. The comeback was completed in dramatic fashion when Jennifer Echegini fired home the winner with just two minutes of normal time remaining.

Statistical dominance underscored Nigeria’s victory, with the Falcons recording 14 attempts to Morocco’s 10 while enjoying 55% possession. Their 280 completed passes at 69% accuracy demonstrated superior control of proceedings, though both sides maintained discipline throughout an intense but clean contest that produced no cautions.

This historic triumph extends Nigeria’s record as Africa’s most successful women’s football nation and provides perfect preparation for their upcoming Olympic Games campaign. The victory parade is expected to draw thousands of fans when the team returns to Abuja later this week.

The Moroccan team, while heartbroken, received plaudits for their tournament performance that has significantly raised the profile of women’s football in North Africa. CAF President Patrice Motsepe praised both finalists for an “exceptional showcase of African football at its finest.”

This latest success reinforces Nigeria’s continental dominance while sending a strong message to global rivals. For Moroccan football authorities, the runners-up finish represents significant progress as they continue developing the women’s game in the region.

Post-match celebrations saw emotional scenes as captain Rasheedat Ajibade dedicated the victory to Nigerian fans, declaring: “This trophy belongs to every girl dreaming of football glory across our nation.”
