Supremacy Dispute Between Ooni and New Alaafin, Asserts Olugbon

In a recent statement, the Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, has dismissed any notion of a supremacy battle between the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi.

This declaration was made during a courtesy visit to the Alaafin’s residence in Oyo, where Oba Alao emphasized that both monarchs hold distinct and revered positions within the Yoruba traditional hierarchy, with no room for rivalry.Oba Alao, who serves as the Vice Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between the Olugbon and the Alaafin, dating back to the era of the Oyo Empire. He praised the new Alaafin as a wise and academically equipped leader, expressing gratitude to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his role in the selection process.

The visit focused on discussing progressive issues affecting Oyo State, the traditional council, and the broader Yoruba community. Oba Alao emphasized the importance of unity among traditional rulers for the advancement of the Yoruba race, urging calm and cooperation among monarchs. In a similar vein, another Ogun monarch, the Eselu of Eselu Kingdom, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, advised the new Alaafin to prioritize dialogue and reconciliation, particularly with those opposing his ascension.

He stressed that power among traditional rulers has been decentralized and that focusing on regional development and unity is more beneficial than engaging in supremacy battles.Overall, these statements underscore the commitment of Yoruba monarchs to maintaining harmony and promoting collective progress within the traditional institution.
