Switzerland Endorses Nigeria’s Bid for IMO Category ‘C’ Council Seat

August 29, 2025 — Switzerland has formally pledged support for Nigeria’s bid to secure a Category ‘C’ seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026/2027 biennium.

The Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Patrick Felix Egloff, delivered a letter of endorsement to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, during a courtesy visit in Abuja. He described Nigeria as a strong candidate and commended the country’s commitment to multilateralism and maritime safety.

In his remarks, Oyetola welcomed the endorsement, stressing that it reflected recognition of Nigeria’s efforts in advancing global maritime standards. He highlighted Nigeria’s vast maritime resources, including its 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone and extended continental shelf of 16,300 kilometers, underscoring the country’s strategic position as a maritime nation.

The minister outlined ongoing initiatives such as the development of a National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy, collaborations with the World Bank, African Union IBAR, Norway, and other partners, and the adoption of Public-Private Partnerships to drive rapid growth in the sector.

On maritime safety, Oyetola cited the success of the Deep Blue Project, which has helped eliminate piracy in Nigerian waters over the past three years. He emphasized the government’s commitment to extending maritime security across the Gulf of Guinea through regional partnerships.

Ambassador Egloff noted that Switzerland’s backing followed a formal request from Nigeria earlier this year, affirming his country’s confidence in Nigeria’s candidacy.

With Switzerland’s endorsement, Nigeria’s campaign for a seat on the IMO Council gathers further momentum ahead of the elections scheduled for October/November 2025.
