Onboard the historic flight were high-ranking government officials, including the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, the Executive Governor of Niger State, Hon. Umar Mohammed Bago, and the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Dr. Sabi Abdullahi.
The inaugural flight marks a major milestone in the federal government’s ongoing efforts to decentralize air travel and deepen infrastructural access across the six geopolitical zones. The airport, renamed after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in honour of his contributions to national development and economic renewal, is expected to boost both commercial and passenger traffic within the North-Central corridor and beyond.
Aviation stakeholders, policy analysts, and residents of Niger State have hailed the development as timely, especially at a period when the government is aggressively pursuing transportation reform and economic diversification. The flight’s successful arrival is seen not only as symbolic but also as practical—signifying the growing integration of Nigeria’s hinterlands with key economic hubs.
Hon. Idris, speaking briefly after disembarking, described the moment as “more than just a flight — it is a flight into a future where infrastructure truly serves the people.” Governor Bago echoed similar sentiments, praising the collaboration between the federal and state governments that made the airport upgrade and renaming possible.
