TCN Enhances Grid Stability with New 5,910 MVA Transformer Installations

Abuja, June 19, 2025 – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has significantly boosted the stability and efficiency of the national power grid by installing an additional 5,910 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of transformer capacity across the country.

The milestone was achieved through the deployment of 68 power transformers and 10 mobile substations between May 2023 and May 2025, as part of the company’s Grid Expansion and Stability Programme. The project forms a critical component of ongoing efforts to modernise the transmission infrastructure and increase electricity delivery to Nigerians.

According to TCN, the installations cover strategic locations nationwide, easing congestion across major transmission corridors and enhancing the grid’s ability to deliver more electricity to distribution networks and end-users. The company noted that the new additions will help reduce transmission losses, improve voltage regulation, and minimise downtime due to technical faults.

“We are committed to expanding the grid and delivering a more stable and efficient power supply,” a senior official said, adding that the investments are aligned with the Federal Government’s energy reform agenda.

The upgrade was made possible through a combination of internally generated funds and support from international development partners. Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a necessary step toward resolving the country’s long-standing electricity transmission challenges.

While the enhancement marks a positive stride in grid infrastructure, TCN emphasized the need for continued collaboration among sector players to ensure that improvements in transmission capacity translate into better service delivery for electricity consumers.

The company also appealed to Nigerians to support the effort by safeguarding power infrastructure against vandalism and illegal connections, which continue to pose serious setbacks to national power development.
