The inaugural South West Games 2025 and BAT SWAG came to a thrilling end on Friday at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium Onikan, with Team Lagos emerging as the overall winner.
Medal Haul
Team Lagos won an impressive 14 gold, five silver, and two bronze medals, followed by Ogun State in second place with 10 gold medals, and Ondo State in third place with three gold medals.
U-18 Athletes Shine
The games featured U-18 athletes from the six states of the region, competing in seven sports: football, basketball, archery, table tennis, athletics, boxing, and volleyball.
Lagos Dominates in Multiple Sports
Team Lagos dominated in several sports, including table tennis, where they won all five gold medals and two silver medals. They also excelled in boxing, winning all four gold medals available, and archery, where they won seven medals (four gold, two silver, and one bronze).
Sustaining the Games
Convener of the games, Lanre Alfred, emphasized that the games will be sustained as an annual event, providing a platform for young talents to develop and thrive.
“The South West Games belongs to the youth, and as leaders and stakeholders, it is our responsibility to ensure that they have the platform they need to succeed,” Alfred said.
The games were held from March 25 to 28, with the closing ceremony featuring an exciting U-18 football final match between Team Lagos and Ekiti, which Lagos won 5-2.
