Teenager Jakub Mensik Stuns Djokovic to Win Miami Open

Czech teenager Jakub Mensik has pulled off a stunning upset, defeating Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-4) to win the Miami Open. The 19-year-old’s victory denied Djokovic his 100th singles title.

Mensik’s win is all the more remarkable given that he was on the verge of withdrawing from the tournament due to a knee injury just hours before his first-round match. However, after receiving treatment and taking painkillers, he decided to compete and went on to drop just two sets throughout the tournament.

Mensik’s rise to fame has been swift, breaking into the top 100 in February 2024 after reaching the Qatar Open final. His victory in Miami marks the biggest title of his career, and he will now rise to a career-high of 24th in the world rankings.

Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, was gracious in defeat, congratulating Mensik on his win and wishing him the best of luck for the future. The Serbian tennis star will have to wait for another opportunity to secure his 100th singles title.
