Tragedy was narrowly averted on Tuesday, June 3, when a telecommunications mast belonging to IHS Towers collapsed on a residential building in Unity Estate, Alagbole area of Ogun State, leaving the property’s landlord injured. The incident, which occurred around 2:39 p.m., followed a heavy rainstorm accompanied by thunder that reportedly struck the structure.
The mast, located in the Ajuwon-Akute axis and situated dangerously close to residential homes, came crashing down during the downpour, causing significant structural damage to the building. The impact left the landlord, who was inside at the time, with injuries. Fortunately, concerned neighbours quickly mobilized to rescue him from the rubble before rushing him to a nearby medical facility, where he is currently receiving treatment. Medical sources have since confirmed that his condition is stable.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, CSP Omolola Odutola, revealed that the case was formally reported by a resident, Mr. Moses Olalere. She noted that a preliminary investigation is already underway to determine the exact cause of the collapse and assess whether negligence played a role.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, has directed all Area Commanders to commence immediate engagement with companies operating masts within or near residential zones. The objective, according to the police, is to evaluate the structural integrity of such installations and ensure they pose no threat to lives and property, especially during adverse weather conditions.
CSP Odutola, in a statement issued on Wednesday morning, assured the public that updates will be provided as investigations progress. She emphasized the importance of safety compliance by telecom operators, stressing that the police will not tolerate any form of corporate negligence that endangers citizens.
The incident has reignited public concern over the placement and maintenance of telecommunication infrastructure in densely populated areas, with residents calling on regulatory authorities to enforce stricter safety standards and monitor compliance across the industry.
